Au cours de l’été 2011, l'artiste s’est rendu en Islande, fuyant sa vie quotidienne et rêvant de créer une nouvelle identité pour lui-même dans un territoire inconnu. La solitude lui a permis de découvrir la vie des autres dans des conversations avec des étrangers dans les longues et légères nuits nordiques. Après de nombreux voyages, des années et des cigarettes partagées, l’histoire de Smoke a pris forme, devenant le disque de quelque chose qui n’existe plus, ou qui n’a peut-être jamais existé, à travers des images dramatiques en noir et blanc pleines de contrastes et de force.

With the work Smoke, the young photographer Theo Elias won the second edition of the Book Dummy Award organised by the Spanish publisher La Fábrica and the international photography festival Photo London.

In the summer of 2011 the creator travelled to Iceland, fleeing from his daily life and dreaming about the idea of creating a new identity for himself in an unknown territory. Solitude enabled him to discover the lives of others in conversations with strangers in the long and light Nordic nights. After many journeys, years and shared cigarettes, the story of Smoke took shape, becoming the record of something that no longer exists, or that perhaps never existed, through dramatic black and white images full of contrasts and force.

Theo Elias (1985) is a photographer from Sweden whose works deal with personal subjects such as memory, truth and fiction. Made over the course of some thirty years, the photographs in this book depict the many faces of April Dawn Alison, the female persona of an Oakland, California based photographer who lived in the world as a man. This previously unseen body of self-portraits, which was given to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2017, begins tentatively in 1970s in black-and-white, and evolves in the 80s into an exuberant, wildly colorful, and obsessive practice inspired by representations of women in classic film, BDSM pornography and advertising. A singular, long-term exploration of a non-public self, the archive contains photographs that are beautiful, hilarious, enigmatic, and heartbreakingly sad, sometimes all at once.

Norman Parkinson (1913-1990) is one of the greatest and most influential photographers of the twentieth century. Between 1916 and 1939 thousands of films and photographs were produced in France, in line with the national policy encouraging scientific and industrial research. These largely unknown images stand as visual witnesses to twenty years of invention and research. Their analog archives trace through the history of innovation, anchored at first in war and national defense, before shifting towards civilian and domestic life. This history, interlaced with design, lies at the crossroads of science, technology and industry. The images also tell a story that is still unfolding today, that of the institutionalization of research. From the very beginning a systematic archiving policy was set up. These administrative, yet aesthetically breathtaking images were produced in mass by the institution.
